It is the stories of the land we call Canada that are stepping stones from the past. They will lead us into the one future we must all share. We need only be willing to listen.
The exhibition meaningfully depicts Black women in their various states and with an energy of refusal; whether it is relation to perform a prescribed role, level of sexuality, or position of submission.
The keys to its translation involve a mixing and matching the wire letters of the artist’s alphabet with our own experience as a way of “sounding out” the material world around us.
The exhibition’s theme is a heavy one; one of loss and grief. The work addresses the issues head on, with solemnity, but around the edges there’s a quiet sense of humour.
