The mixed media works of Rock Therrien embrace the humour that often touches the viewer through the artist’s use of enlarged figures and playful text. His characters bring the canvas to life, evoking memories of family and home with a wit that is both joyous and profound. Despite the light-hearted subject matter of his pieces, Therrien’s works maintain the deeper essential concept, reminding the viewer that with the right outlook, happiness is easy to achieve.
Born in Bellechasse, Quebec, Therrien combines traditional folk-art of Quebec with a comic-book style appeal which integrates authentic Canadian symbolism. These scenes of Quebecois life draw the viewer into a world where joie-de-vivre is the highest priority. The gorgeous layering of paint and found objects, combined with a beautiful sanded finish, creates an effect which is both fresh and nostalgic. Influenced by childhood heroes of fiction like Asterix and Obelix, the pieces depict a life of fun, adventure and relishing the beauty of the moment.
