Here and There  |  The Iranian Art Scene of Today
Artist Sadegh Tirafkan in conversation with curator Andrea Fitzpatrick,
preceded by a video screening curated by Amirali Ghasemi

Gallery 44 is thrilled to welcome contemporary Tehran-based artist Sadegh Tirafkan to Toronto for a panel discussion with curator Andrea Fitzpatrick. This event is presented in partnership with Parya Trillium Foundation, an Iranian-Canadian community centre. It is a precursor to the upcoming Contact Photography Festival Feature Exhibition “Gender and Exposure in Contemporary Iranian Photography (http://www.gallery44.org/genderandexposure)” at Gallery 44 in May.

Amirali Ghasemi, Coffee Shop Ladies, No_ 7, 2004-5

Thoughtfully assembled by curator Andrea Fitzpatrick and featuring works by Amirali Ghasemi, Abbas Kowsari, Zeinab Salarvand, Arman Stepanian, Samira Eskandarfar and Sadegh Tirafkan, this exhibition addresses the censorship and the exposure of gendered bodies in Iranian lens-based art. The artwork presented is by some of Iran’s most celebrated lens-based artists, emerging to established, most of whom have never shown their work in Canada before.

We are also launching a giving campaign to raise funds to pay for the travel of the artists and their artwork to Toronto. Your donation of $50 or more towards the upcoming exhibition “Gender and Exposure in Contemporary Iranian Photography” will help Gallery 44 expose Toronto to thought-provoking art being created in Iran today. Donate online via Canada Helps: visit http://bit.ly/g44exposures or send a cheque to Gallery 44.  A charitable receipt will be issued for your donation.

We hope you can join us for both the event at Parya on March 29, and at Gallery 44
on May 4 for the opening reception of “Gender and Exposure in Contemporary Iranian
Photography.”
