Barbara Cole is a self-taught photographic artist who has built an extraordinary career in image making since beginning her practice in the 1980s. Best known for her still images and her lenticular photographs of figures underwater, Cole harnesses the medium of water as a natural lens which refocuses and reinterprets a painterly aesthetic.
Inspired by its inherent reflective quality, the underwater environment becomes a means through which to challenge our perception of the figure in space. In her fifth underwater series, ‘Duplicity,’ each image represents a figurative kaleidoscope, achieved through the weightlessness of water and the opposing reflections that are naturally created on its surface.
The show is open: September 12 – 28, 2013 at Bau-Xi Photo, 324 Dundas St West. Gallery Hours: Monday – Sunday 10:00 – 5:30 p.m.
