This untitled work by Mary Porter was initially conceived after first seeing the mountains of southern Alberta and the Athabasca Glacier during a residency in Banff in 2010. The rugged landscape triggered an interest to learn about geological formations. It also engaged Porter in trying to represent these processes through her work. Utilizing the paper to reveal and hide and reveal again surfaces that the artist has worked and reworked with paint, the method mimics the pavan of geologic time, climatic change and tectonic shifts.
Mary Porteris a Toronto-based artist originally from Nova Scotia. She earned her MFA at York University and has studied at Concordia University in Montreal, and NSCAD in Nova Scotia. Artist’s website: http://maryporter.ca/
