As the failure of capitalist structure becomes more and more evident, we experience intangible attachments to place. Living and creating in the margins of the mainstream as train hoppers, hitch-hikers, and mad cyclists; moving from apartment to apartment, from one neighbourhood to another, place can be at once elusive, and forever grounding. Place can be physical: painting at 2 a.m. while the last train rumbles beneath you; it can be entirely mental, a memory, or a mood. Place can be social: accepted ideologies and perspectives on caste, race, sexuality, and education. How does this myriad of places and spaces real or imagined, shape our perceptions of others and ourselves? What voices are realized and what social systems define their value?
Place Unheard calls on voices from miles off the beaten path to create work on the theme of “place”—from artists whose perceptions of “place” are distorted by transient lifestyles, socioeconomic realities, and the chaos underground. This visual art exhibition features the work of 9 young artists, all hailing from the outer regions of regularly scheduled culture. Place Unheard is presented by Catscan—a Toronto-based arts collective dedicated to creating an alternative and accessible forum for arts education.
Says Catscan founder and coordinator, Ashton Shearer: “Formal arts education is totally inaccessible to a wide range of artists. Centralized institutions pose the risk of sterilizing creative thought and culture as a whole. We reject the exclusivity associated with ‘cool’ and ‘hip’ art networks. This show will counteract those paradigms.”
This art exhibition represents voices and visions from Places Unheard.
Works include mixed media, photography , encaustic and painting .
