Hangman Art Gallery is proud to present Citation, the Rosedale Heights School of the Arts senior photography, drawing and painting and graphics students art show based on citation (the act of citing or quoting a reference to an authority or a precedent) and appropriation (the artistic practice or technique of reworking images from well-known paintings, photographs, etc. in one’s own work).

Citation has the photography students referencing the work of iconic painters or paintings, while the painting, graphics and printmaking students referencing iconic photographs or photographers. The students studies the works of art for inspiration, either referencing subject matter or technique, but not copying them; they considered how to interpret the essence of the work in a new context.

“In this show, we not only want to reference the artists who came before, but we also want to reference each other. Each art form has unique elements and the artists who practice the form have challenged themselves to use the medium in a unique way. Our hope is that by choosing to interpret their images through the filter of another medium the students’ appreciation and understanding of their own art work and the work of others will be expanded.” Fanciska Kouwenhoven Art Instructor
