The body of work in this exhibition, titled “The Pain Of Desire,” addresses the adolescent portrayal of the self by Nikki White. In an attempt to hold on to past experiences, Nikki fetishizes them in her work by marking them as specific times in her life.
Nikki’s work is a young adult’s approach to cataloguing the period of adolescence by using infantilization to show nostalgia and longing for the past. Nikki’s work shows that culture creates a reflection, and that reflection is the artist. Nikki’s images strongly convey her message using an “in-your-face” approach. Through the power of suggestion, these images come together to form a narrative of identity, desire, and sexuality. The viewer cannot mistake the intentions of her work, but is still left questioning the underlying story.
