yumart is pleased to present The Larry Dickison Project with a.k.a. yum
“It was about a year or two after I met Larry in Cameron House that we discovered through random conversation that we were both illustrators of a ‘science fiction’ bent…that we had in fact both been commissioned several times to do illustrations for ‘On Spec – The Magazine of Speculative Fiction’.
From there, we decided to bring our portfolios to the bar to see what each others’ work was like. It was obvious immediately that our illustrations, so totally different in style and subject matter, were complimentary in quite wonderful ways: I use a lot of female figures, Larry uses a lot of gender-unknown yet masculine creatures, and we both use a lot of texture and contrast.
‘Well, we must do something together – a joint project’ was the consensus of all our friends at the bar. But what? We decided to come up with quirky titles, phrases, word snaps, and then go off and create an original individual illustration to fit our perception of what the title could mean – how it could be portrayed – what little witticisms and sly plays on words that we could come up with (so there would be two very different works for each word snap).
Interestingly enough, Larry chose a horizontal format, and I chose vertical. Once again; different yet complimentary.
We are still working on the project – I don’t know if it will ever end – but at this point, we decided to do something with what we have already – after all, it’s been over five years since we began…
Hence ‘The Larry Dickison Project with a.k.a. yum’ self-published under the yumart imprint – the first of hopefully many more such publications to come.” ( from the Foreword by Y.M. Whelan)
We look forward to seeing you at what promises to be an exciting event!
