A Work of Heart is a small social entreprenuership that sells artwork to raise money for building projects in Kenya. Our team successfully completed a daycare renovation last year for a group of women and their children living with HIV. and now aim to fundraise enough money to buy a plot of land to farm on.
It’s not just a piece of art, its a work of heart.
Laura Armstrong is a self taught artist living in Toronto. She founded A Work of Heart 2 years ago after an completing an volunteer trip to Kenya. She recently completed grad school for fundraising and volunteer management at Humber College.
Laura became involved with NGOs during her undergrad at WLU by volunteering abroad to experience other cultures and learn about global issues. Her work with Dominican Republic Education and Medical Support (D.R.E.A.M.S) allowed her to travel to the mountains of the Dominican Republic to a small village near Haiti, to build a home for a family in need. She continued to work with D.R.E.A.M.S as a board member focusing on fundraising and public relations throughout her undergrad. She continued her humanitarian work abroad with The Global Youth Network (GYN) working to educate and mobilize young people towards making positive change.
In 2008, she traveled to India to work on famine relief in the north east for one month. In 2009, she completed a one month internship with GYN, to Peru to work with child workers and dengue fever prevention.
In 2010, she took on her most memorable role as team leader for GYN Team Kenya. Her group of Toronto students worked with an organization of women and children with HIV, promoting positive living. She and her team also worked with Ugunja Community Resource Centre (UCRC) a community development NGO located in western Kenya, who serve the area of communities to promote sustainable development, and empower communities through increasing access to education.
She founded A Work of Heart, a small online business that sells artwork and donates a portion to building projects in Kenya! Laura is an avid runner, blogger, painter, photographer, and world traveler. She aspires to be a artist that not only educates, but inspires change.
Sanjay Patel is an abstract artist who paints live at many events and fundraisers. His unique style and fast pass is always a crowed pleaser and hightlight of any show!
