2 of 2 Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by Toronto based artist Jenna Crook. The exhibition is curated by Nadine Khoury.
Crook’s paintings in this exhibition explore her fascination with abstracted reality. They communicate to the viewer what is present, but at the same time, make you more aware of what has been lost.
Crook says, “When people look at an image, they never see just one thing. Instantly, our brain will start to relate and connect that image to a whole mess of other things – things that often seem unrelated – but if there is a slight connection, the mind will find it. Sometimes, the thing that actually connects the two is their complete disconnect. This is how we understand everything; things make sense only in relation to other things, nothing exists solely by itself.”
Viewers of Crook’s paintings are thrown into a deep ambiguity of distorted communication, and fractured images. They become inclined to connect their own memories and experiences to the work, while simultaneously acknowledging their gaps in memory as things have rotted away. Crook’s paintings speak to the human struggle for balance in a time where things are rapidly becoming more connected, yet just as quickly, disconnected.
Jenna Crook born 1991 in Toronto Canada, is an emerging artist studying at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCADU). Her paintings have been included in several exhibitions around Toronto.
