AutoExuvium brings together images from an ongoing body of work that explores the concept of automobiles as “shells” or outer skin for those encased within them. The scars they bear suggest ‘impact’ literally and symbolically and suggest a strained relationship with their environment. Idealized visions of mechanical beauty are subverted to something tarnished and tortured yet still alluring. By compressing and “pulling” the digital image’s data the wrecked car degenerates further and serves as an uneasy, modern vanitas.
Giovanni Senisi is an emerging Toronto-based artist and has been teaching Art, Design, and Photography since 2001. He has studied art at a number of schools including Queen’s University, University of Toronto, Université Sainte-Anne, and Sheridan College. Much of his practice attempts to engage the ongoing discussion regarding photography’s relationship with painting while metaphorically exploring the transience of human life. AutoExuvium is part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. For more information contact: info@giovannisenisi.com
